If you are planning a tropical getaway this fall or winter, make sure you incorporate pretty hues of blue in your wardrobe. Not only will your wardrobe match the beautiful backdrop of the blue skies and aqua waters, but according to color psychology, blue is the color of tranquility and relaxation. It’s no wonder why we are all attracted to the ocean.
Thus, for our trip to Bimini, Bahamas, I decided to go with classic blue and white stripes, perfect for a beach vacay. The “Breton Striped” shirt originated from the French navy sailor’s uniform, designed to help distinguish sailors from the ocean so you could see them more easily if they fell overboard. At the time, all of the French navy hailed from Brittany, so the shirt was coined the “Breton” shirt and contained 21 stripes, one for each of Napolean’s victories against the British.
On a trip to the coast, Coco Chanel became inspired by the sailors’ attire and used it in her 1917 nautical line. Chanel designed her Breton top for ladies to be worn with flared trousers, which was a stark contrast to the very popular corseted dress at that time. By the 1930’s, the Breton stripe had been elevated to “haute couture” status, making it a popular choice for fashionable upper class women.
I wanted to wear something with stripes for a nautical look, but more importantly, I wanted something COMFORTABLE – light and airy – since the weather was 88 degrees with 80% humidity. The shirt I’m wearing is a super soft, relaxed-fitting blue and white striped short sleeve tee with a wide scoop neck from Emma & Sam.
Emma & Sam is an innovative t-shirt brand made in Los Angeles, California. The brand was created in 2004 with the goal of being on the leading edge of the t-shirt business. Emma & Sam has become known for their high quality fabrics, washes and novelty treatments as well as their great basics.
It is made of 100% Tencel, which is sustainable fabric, regenerated from wood cellulose. It is similar in hand to rayon and bamboo, both regenerated fabrics. However, Tencel is one of the most environmentally-friendly regenerated fabrics.
I really love this shirt – it is so soft, light and comfortable. Although I got it a few weeks ago for 40% off at LF Stores, you can now get it on Emma & Sam’s website for only $12! (original price was $78). Such a great deal I think I may just get a 2nd one! In fact, they are having an end-of-summer sale and everything on their website is 60% off or more. Check it out, click here.
I paired it with high-rise, white denim cut-offs from Topshop at Nordstrom. The dramatically frayed and ripped hems give a little edginess to the otherwise classic striped outfit. They are on sale, 35% off, now $34.99.
