These are the final four days of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and it’s a great time to get your basic fall-weather pieces. You can do all your shopping online this weekend and don’t have to leave the house. Nordstrom has free shipping and free returns, all the time. So if you don’t like an item or it doesn’t fit right, its an easy, no-hassle return in the mail from the comfort of your home. I also love that Nordstrom carries plenty of petite sizes. AND it’s tax-free weekend too!
It’s hard to think of sweaters, leggings, and boots, when it’s still 93 degrees out, but there are some great deals going on right now on wardrobe staples for autumn and the prices will go back up on August 8th.
The basic building pieces for an autumn outfit are a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt underneath to build layers upon, a great pair of leggings, and, of course, a fabulous pair of boots!
Layering is more than just placing a jacket or sweater over any shirt. You have to be tactical when it comes to layering.
For your bottom layer, you’ll need a basic, solid, neutral-colored, light-weight top. This casual, long sleeved, Slub T-shirt from Caslon is a great start. See my prior post on why I love slub tees. It’s thin enough to wear under layers and won’t make you look bulky, yet thick enough that it can be worn alone if you need to strip off the layers when the temperature warms up midday or you’re inside in a heated place. You can wear it tucked it with a jacket, or pulled down past the waist with a cropped sweater layered on top. It comes in petite sizes. I’m wearing a XXSP. Regular price $29 and on-sale now for $17.90.
Next, layer! Stay with neutrals or add pops of color here. There are so many options: a suede jacket, a leather moto, a cardigan, a buttoned chambray or plaid shirt, a sleeveless turtleneck sweater, or just simply a scarf. What about that cropped top or tank you’ve been wearing all summer? It’s an easy transition to fall by layering that summer piece on top of this thin, long-sleeved T-shirt. You can master the art of layering this autumn!
On to leggings. Leggings are the BEST. We love them. They are oh so comfortable, versatile, come in array of colors and styles, and fit so perfectly inside your tall boots. Leggings are one the the biggest fashion trends for fall, which means you’re going to see them everywhere you look.
However, leggings are also one of those tricky styles that a lot of women wear completely wrong. First, the fabric on a proper legging should be thick so you do not see the person’s skin peeking through. If you can see through the leggings, then they’re either too sheer or they’re tights and not leggings. Second, yoga pants are not a substitute. Please leave the yoga pants at the yoga studio. For the same reason above, yoga pants do NOT count as leggings.
When looking for a nice pair of leggings, look for one made made of quality fabric and lycra that can shape and flatter your figure. I am quite impressed with these Seamed Leggings from Halogen. I have some leggings from other more well-known, more expensive brands, but find these Halogen ones to be of great quality and fit at a much better price point.
It’s a good combination of rayon, nylon, and spandex that is comfortable yet thick. The seamed detailing accentuates the streamlined silhouette of sleek and stretchy leggings. In addition, it is topped with wide elastic insets at the waist that serve as a nice “tummy tuck”. It is petite-friendly with a 27″ inseam so I didn’t have to hem the bottoms. I’m wearing an XXSP. Regular price $49 and on sale now for $29.90.
Lastly, every woman must have a pair of stylish boots, whether booties, mid-calf, knee-high, or over-the-knee. You can instantly embolden your look with a dramatic over-the-knee boot. I love these Steve Madden “Gleemer” Over-the-Knee boots. They have a lush suede finish and corset-inspired back laces to give a little retro allure. With a 22″ boot shaft, they fit nicely over my shorter legs, the heel is a medium thickness and not a chunky block, and the foot is narrow (may not be good for those with wider feet) – all great features when you have a smaller frame. Regular price is $149 and on sale now for $99.90.
Get your basics this weekend. This whole outfit is 33-40% off and prices go back up on Monday. Happy Shopping!
